Explore the Charm of Mount Desert Island in the Spring

Springtime on Mount Desert Island is a feast for the senses. Imagine exploring this beauty on exhilarating hikes, scenic bike rides, and peaceful kayaking adventures. Surely you'll find a wonderful spring getaway in the Acadia region — and just maybe the perfect place to call home.

Despite being long-time residents, the brokers at Swan Agency Real Estate are always taken in by the charm of it all when we stroll along the picturesque waterfront. There’s excitement in the air as the community gets busy planning activities that draw visitors to this town on the edge of majestic Acadia National Park.

Outdoor Adventures in the Springtime

Everyone longs for outdoor adventures during springtime in Maine, and Mount Desert Island is the perfect place! Bicycle enthusiasts can pedal through carriage roads surrounded by lush greenery, blooming wildflowers, and the invigorating scent of pine. There are several bike rental shops in town from which to choose a traditional bike or an e-bike. Or for a slower pace, enjoy lovely, tranquil garden tours and guided nature walks.

You can also explore by foot the many hiking trails in Acadia National Park, which offer breathtaking views of the coastline.

When Does Springtime Start in Maine?

To many Mainers, there are five seasons — the fifth is what we refer to as "mud season."  It's the time of year when the frost is out of the ground, the pastures and fields along the shoreline are soft, and your car may need a couple extra washes to keep it looking clean.

While it can be messy, the best part about mud season is that it is short. The warmth of the sun quickly dries things up and kicks off the best season of all: spring!

And on Mount Desert Island, a sure sign of spring that this time of year brings is the abundant wildflower bloom, with new bursts of color and heavenly floral scents to invigorate your senses.

Paddleboarding enthusiasts can head to Frenchman Bay, where the calm waters promise glimpses of seals equally happy that spring is here. For whale-watching, you’ll need to head out farther than paddleboards will take you, but plenty of exhilarating whale-watching excursions offer your pick of days and times to head out to deeper waters.

If you enjoy a close-up view of sea life – but prefer to stay dry yourself – stop by The Oceanarium and Education Center (opening for season in May) to see blue, cotton candy and orange lobsters! The nine tanks at the Center are also home to lumpfish, hermit and green crabs, sea stars, anemone and many more exciting marine creatures from the Gulf of Maine.
