SULLIVAN — The Dunbar Store, a Downeast staple located next to the scenic overlook on Route 1, has been listed for sale with Swan Agency Real Estate.
The 2,745-square-foot building that sits on .4 acres has a price tag of $785,000, according to the listing.
Owners Dawn Lamendola and her husband, Josh Winer, purchased the property in 2022 from then-owners Scott Holtz and Bobby Chesire, who brought the store back to life with extensive renovations when they reopened it in 2019. Before that, the store had been closed and the property vacant since 2014. It has been operating as a fresh market and deli offering daily specials.
Lamendola and Winer also have businesses on Mount Desert Island, including House Wine in Bar Harbor and Acadia Photo Safari, where Winer brings customers to Acadia National Park and shows them how to take high-quality photographs.
“It’s been great, there just aren’t enough hours in the day,” Lamendola told The American. “We love the community, we love it out here, it’s a really nice change of pace from MDI and we appreciate all the regulars and visitors that have helped us out.”
The business will remain open while it is listed.
“[We’re] just trying to pass it on to the next good stewards,” Lamendola said.
Dunbar’s has a storied history and was built circa 1881 across the street from where the business stands today. Emery Dunbar rebuilt the store where it currently stands after a fire claimed the original structure.
